LESSON FEES: $55 for 30-minute lessons $70 for 45-minute lessons $80 for 60-minute lessons SUBJECTS: ESL, Korean, Subject Guide BILINGUAL IN: Korean COACH BIO: Maddy is currently pursuing an online master’s degree in health communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her undergrad was in the same subject, but she also got a certificate in TESOL, because she loves linguistics and curriculum development. After graduating in 2015, she moved to South Korea to teach ESL. She took a break from teaching to study Korean language, then went back to teaching ESL, during which time she also volunteered at a local community center as a Korean language instructor. After two years of doing this, in 2021, Maddy came back to the US and is loving teaching Korean online while she works on her master’s degree. Because Maddy was homeschooled from kindergarten to 12th grade, she knows the joys and pitfalls of that journey. Her highschool education was a “hodge-podge” of different homeschool programs, but she wouldn’t have it any other way! Homeschooling allowed her to focus on the areas that she loved, and supplement the areas where she struggled, in a way that’s led to her current success. Maddy’s drive for learning and growing is a major factor in what she loves about education – both as a student and as an educator. The “ah-ha moment” makes it all worth it. Finally figuring out a grammar or theory that has been difficult, or seeing someone else’s eyes light up with the same realization, is so rewarding! Because most students are capable of self-study for grammar, reading, writing and listening, and many activities are quite conducive to individual learning, Maddy’s classes focus heavily on speaking. Early learners can expect a lot of structured conversation using grammar patterns; more advanced speakers will have more free-talking time. Because Maddy has created her own language curriculum, it’s easy to adjust any materials to the students interests and needs, using the general structure of vocab/grammar practice before class; dynamic conversation during class time; and listening, reading and writing exercises after class. When Maddy isn’t teaching or studying herself, she loves to read historical fiction or about issues related to Korea and healthcare. If you’d like a reading recommendation, just ask, but be prepared for a long list!
