I appreciate that learning is often not easy; it takes effort to forge connections and apply new knowledge to novel circumstances. However, I cannot learn on behalf of my students any more than a personal trainer can lift weights on behalf of their clients. In my view, the best coaches not only challenge their athletes, they smile while doing it. “Yes, we're going to peddle up that ridiculous mountain. It will not be easy, but we will get stronger.” Subsequently, future obstacles – seen and unforeseen – will feel easier. I strive to promote authenticity, critical thinking, self-excavation, diversity of thought, and cognitive empathy. My goal is to enlarge, enrich, and enliven students' worldview. In addition to teaching, my interests include keeping up with current events, creating card tricks, reviewing movies, and writing fiction.
